Tonight, after the

volleyball game, husband and I went to the yummy restraunt to eat dinner. (yes, cathy waited on us and ed cooked an awesome cheesesteak). Faintly, I could hear the kuntree and westerrrrrn music, doing my best to block it out. Suddenly, I heard it. I heard the song Vel and I used to listen to over and over and over as a little girls. It was on the flip side of the 45 "BONANZA" (sung by the late great PA...Lorne Greene) was recorded on. So I came home and googled it. OMG. I found the old video...I had no idea there was a video. So now I bring to you something that has brought back so many memories. My favorite part of the song is "...and I was looking down the bore of that deadly 44 of Ringo's." What to do

when you wake up at 4 in the morning and can't go back to sleep:

• clean the cat box
• take out the trash
• look through the house to find any dirty dishes
• put said dishes in the dishwasher
• make coffee
• read a christmas catalogue
• go back to bed

Did it help? Well, I fell back to sleep at 6:00 when husband's alarm went off. Woke up 15 minutes later. Now I'm enjoying my cup of coffee.

Glorious Music

was heard this year at All-State music teacher's convention. Each year, special guests for choir, band or orchestra come and perform for the host night concert and then give seminars during the following days. This year, we were honored and privileged to have





Here is what i found on the net about this terrific band.
"The United States Military Academy Concert Band is a direct descendant of the small Band of Musick that had assembled at West Point by 1817. The modest twenty-piece military band of that era has evolved into the 48-member wind band of today. "

Under the direction of LTC Liutenant Timothy Holtan, we watched the most incredible concert I have ever seen. It started with the Star Spangled Banner. However, this was not any ordinary Star. They played the original arrangement from 1867, which was somewhat like a Fantasy. At the end, the audience joined in and sang it as we know it today. So take the finest of the finest in the military playing our anthem and combine that with 750 music teachers in a wonderful concert hall, and you can only imagine the product. I will never hear this piece again without my mind going back to that auditorium and remembering the pure glorious sounds. Ever. It will never be the same. I told Lt. Holtan of these feelings the next day after one of the sessions. I had to shake his hand. And I felt compelled to let him know. He smiled and cleary, was touched. I turned and walked away without his comment.


Other selections they played included: Russian Sailor Dance from "The Red Poppy", a couple Sousa marches, a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" sung by Mary Kay Messenger who first performed with this distinguished group at age 12.
Her voice is as pure and lovely as Ariel's from "The Little Mermaid". She also sang exerptfrom "Millie" which I wasn't familiar with, but enjoyed. They played a two compositions commissioned for the West Point Military Band.

Clearly, the most touching part of the evening was when they played the medley of the Armed Forces and asked for the Veterans of those services to stand while they played their "theme". Holtan turned around and pointed to each and every vet that stood and then saluted them all. That was the beginning of my tears.

Shortly thereafter, was the end of the concert and after standing on my feet and yelling with tears streaming down my face, 2 more curtain calls/encores were played. They ended with "America the Beautiful" with a screaming trumpet and Mary singing the melody. We were, of course, still on our feet and singing along, as well.

I had always wanted to join the service and play in the military band. Of course, when you are 19 and have a baby, that dream can never manifest itself. However, I still got to hear them play, which is a dream come true.

I wanted

to write something about Friday the 13th. I've been reading about "Black Friday", the Gregorian Calendar and other somewhat reliable topics that tell why people are so superstitious of Friday the 13th, especially in the month of October! However, you can google and find those articles yourself.

I'm just glad that I went to our girls' volleyball game last night and they won 16 to 14 in the 5th game.

And I'm just glad that my husband is starting to feel better, although the worries won't be gone until Tuesday when we find out if he has cancer or not.

And I'm REALLY glad today is Blue Jean Friday!

Next week is teacher's convention and music All-State. I am looking forward to it!
